Day 4
Big erg of Mhazil – erg Smar

Head north to ross the bed of Draa, filled with tamarisks and acacias, dried for a long time. The desert is a world to discover, hamadas, erds, trees that are missing water. According to the eldest camel drivers (chibanis), this wadi once fed the Iriki lake, now a dry plateau. More precisely, since 1972, with the construction of the dam of El-Mansour-Eddhabi close to Ouarzazate, the wadi Draa lost its ability to flood the long valley. Before this date, the floods came to fill the Iriki lake each year; fish and birds lived in abundance, the wadi following a route sometimes up to the Atlantic Ocean. Nowadays, some dunes block the passage of water, and the wadi is desperately arid. Depending on the rains, the water is released 2 to 5 times a year, but it doesn’t always reach the Ouled Driss. Lunch at the shade of beautiful tamarisk at Lahdibat. The walk continues between trees and sand until the immense erg Smar, not frequented, where we install our camp. In the distance, ruins, the ancient houses of Mhamid-el-Ghouzlane, a village invaded by sand, and to the west some date palms.

Walk the whole morning through the dunes, from one erg to the other, in direction of djebel Bani, until the erg Chegaga. Lunch in the sand with the team of camel drivers, at the foot of the big dune of Abelia. Here we meet our vehicles. It takes 1 to 2 hours on 4×4 to reach Ouled Driss where we arrive by late afternoon.
